Kefir from Kefir Grains – How to Make Kefir

If you think making kefir from real live kefir grains is hard, think again. Making kefir at home is one of the easiest and most rewarding things you can do at home.

Instead of spending tons of money on commercial “kefir” products (notice the quote-unquote?) that don’t have the kind of effectiveness as real homemade kefir, why not make kefir yourself?

To make your own kefir from real kefir grains all you will need are:

1-2 tbsp live kefir grains
1 quart milk
1 liter jar with lid
plastic strainer
plastic spoon
glass or cup
Then just follow these few simple steps.

1. Place the live kefir grains into jar.
2. Add fresh milk into jar with kefir grains.
3. Cover the jar, but not airtight. In fermenting kefir grains in milk, gas is produced by the bacteria. By not covering the jar airtight, you allow the gas build up to escape.
4. Leave for 1-3 days or depending on how you like your kefir to taste. A general rule of thumb is, the longer you ferment the more sour it gets.
5. Separate the liquid, (this is now your kefir), from the kefir grains. Use the plastic strainer as well the plastic spoon to strain the kefir into a glass cup and move the recovered kefir grains into a new jar.
6. Place new fresh milk with the kefir grains and repeat the process.
7. Drink and enjoy your kefir.
